The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is good at forcing companies in the weight-loss industry to not only eat any less-than-truthful words, but also pay for making false claims that prey on individuals seeking a silver bullet solution to their weight problems. According to a 2002 FTC study of weight-loss ads, 55 percent strained credibility by making claims such as, “Lose up to two pounds daily.”

The American Dietitic Association says, “There are no foods or pills that magically burn fat. No super foods will alter your genetic code. The bottom line is simple: If a diet or product sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Terri Evans, acupuncturist, doctor of Oriental medicine and the owner of TAE Healthy Aging Center, is well aware of misleading weight-loss claims and advertised diets, such as the grapefruit or cookie diet, as well as late night infomercial diet supplements that don’t work. After seeing hundreds of clients who suffer from the disappointment engendered by unsuccessful results, Evans created TAE Weight Loss Solutions to enlighten individuals regarding the real truth about body fat. “When your body starts to develop a midriff bulge, it’s saying, ‘Look at me, something is out of balance,’” says Evans, who emphasizes that disease is created when our diet and lifestyle habits push our body so hard that thyroid, adrenal, immune system and acid/alkaline imbalances can result.

According to Evans’ experience, individuals with signs of imbalanced body systems experience symptoms such as belly fat, weight gain, fatigue, gas, insomnia, headaches constipation and aches and pains. “If you focus only on the symptoms by taking drugs or herbs, then you are not addressing the root cause of the imbalance, which escalates and eventually leads to more symptoms and disease,” she says, adding that when the body’s physiology can no longer juggle all the stressors that are impacting it, imbalances manifest as symptoms such as belly fat. “Few people understand that this can open the door to a cascade of problems such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, obesity, insomnia, diabetes and arthritis,” she comments.

According to Evans, treating the symptom of unhealthy body fat with a diet pill or food plans that include pre-packaged, convenience foods means adhering to a regimented diet. These methods don’t focus on resetting the body’s metabolism, the key factor in weight loss, because it leads to building muscle and burning body fat, naturally. “It’s the same as putting a piece of black tape over the flashing red service light in your car and believing that the problem is solved,” notes Evans, who advises that due to stress and poor eating habits, the body needs to be retrained to burn the food/fuel it receives.

“Generally, to reset our metabolism, we need to change the caloric intake, fix the digestion and poor absorption of nutrients going on in the intestinal tract and eat smaller meals every two or three hours, in addition to making a concerted effort to move the body regularly with some form of exercise,” she explains.

Many people not only miss breakfast, the most important meal of the day, but also go three to four hours without eating. Evans says that missed meals, and long pauses between them, can cause the body to go into survival mode and store fat for reserves. “This is a simple fact of physiology which few people know about or understand,” remarks Evans, who seeks to empower her clients by helping them gain respect for the way their body works.

“They don’t have to understand that their adrenals are off or their thyroid is sluggish; they just need to keep putting their focus on positive things and boosting their metabolism, so that they reach a realistic weight-loss goal,” says Evans.
