Therapy Brief: Myofascial Release Therapy Eases Restrictions

Myofascial release therapy, a safe and effective technique involving the application of gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue restrictions, helps to reduce pain and restore motion. The soft tissue component of the connective tissue system permeating and supporting the entire body known as fascia consists of a densely woven network of fibers covering and interpenetrating all muscles, bones and nerves, as well as the spinal cord and internal organs.

A therapist trained in myofascial release therapy gently massages the myofascia, feeling for stiff or tight areas. Working a broader section of the muscular system that may be causing pain reduces tension throughout the body by releasing trigger points.

In a healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy, with the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When physical or emotional trauma, scarring or inflammation occur, the fascia can lose pliability, become tight, restricted and become a source of tension for the rest of the body.

Trauma, whether from a fall, auto accident, whiplash or surgery, habitually poor posture, repetitive stress injuries or chronic emotional stress, has cumulative effects on the body, causing changes in the fascial system. Fascial restrictions that exert excessive pressure on nerves or muscles can cause numerous symptoms such as pain, headaches or restricted motion.

Fascial restrictions also affect flexibility and stability, and are a determining factor in the body’s ability to withstand stress and perform daily activities. The goal of myofascial release therapy is to help individuals regain and maintain well-being through functional, pain-free movement.
