Cupping therapy, which dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures, began enjoying renewed interest when photographers zoomed in on the circular bruises that appeared on Michael Phelps’ upper body during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Trending now, this therapy is described in one of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papryus, dating back to 1550 BC.

Mary Lambrecht, LMT, who practices at Body Wellness of Naples, says, “Clients experience immediate fascial release and rehabilitation when cupping is enhanced with therapeutic massage.” Lambrecht is certified by the International Cupping Therapy Association.

According to WebMD.com, cupping therapy uses either silicone or glass cups applied on the skin to activate lymphatic drainage and increase oxygen flow in fascia and muscular tissue. Relaxing the layer of connective tissue between the skin and the muscle, cups can be moved from place to place on the skin for a massage-like effect, or left stationary for several minutes to reduce congestion, toxins and deep tissue stiffness, as well as to improve circulation and range of motion, plus muscle and connective tissue flexibility.

Cupping can be combined with acupuncture or used alone. The suction, or negative pressure, it provides loosens muscles, encourages blood flow and sedates the nervous system. It can be used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, respiratory conditions and congestion from the common cold.
