Environmentally Speaking

At 6 p.m., August 16, join the SWFL RESET Center for a free zoom conversation on The Effects/Consequences/Benefits of Saving Lake Okeechobee with Mike Elfenbein, Chair of the Charlotte County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Lake Okeechobee’s current woes and those of surrounding estuaries and waters have been many years in the making. Over time, developers have ditched and drained land in the northern Everglades, resulting in rapid fluctuations of water levels in Lake Okeechobee, creating harmful effects to the lake’s delicate ecosystem.
To deal with the surge of water and control flooding, water managers have been releasing large amounts of water from the lake to St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries. These releases have long-term negative impacts on their ecosystems and local communities, including here in Southwest Florida. In this one-hour conversation, Elfenbein, a conservationist and avid outdoorsman, will explore the effects, consequences and benefits of saving Lake Okeechobee and share details about the work currently being performed there by aquaculture.
