Sustainable Together
As I settled in to begin writing this letter, I glanced out my front door and noticed two love doves building their nest on my porch pergola—something they do every spring. I quickly placed a sticky note on the glass door as a reminder to pause and witness this annual celebration of new life. Welcoming their babies is a highlight of my year.
When I reflect on some of the most meaningful experiences in my life, they almost always involve nature. Whether walking along the beach, hiking a challenging mountain trail, tending to my outdoor plants or simply lying in the grass gazing at the sky, these moments ground me. In nature, I feel most connected to myself, to the Earth’s rhythms and to something greater than words can express.
On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million people across the United States participated in one of the largest demonstrations in history to celebrate the first Earth Day and demand environmental action. Today, Earth Day continues to remind us that protecting our planet begins at home. Our special Earth Day section this month features local festivals and family-friendly events to learn, volunteer and take meaningful steps toward a healthier planet. I hope you’ll join in.
This month’s Sustainable Together theme is explored in our feature story, “It Takes a Circle,” which illustrates the innumerable benefits of community-driven sustainability. From permaculture to zero-waste living, Hannah Tytus showcases changemakers proving that shared efforts and mindful collaboration can lead to lasting, regenerative change.
I fell in love with Southwest Florida on my first visit. When I made it my home in the early 1980s, there was far less development and fewer environmental concerns. Today, we must be even more mindful and diligent in caring for this sensitive and beautiful region. Nature offers wisdom in its cycles, healing in its presence and endless inspiration in its quiet unfolding. Stepping outside to observe, listen and reconnect with the natural world that sustains us is more important than ever.
Each month, Natural Awakenings is committed to providing resources and support for your journey toward greater well-being, inspired living and sustainable solutions. Together, we are the guardians of this paradise, and it is our shared responsibility to protect it for future generations.
Sustainably Yours,
