Natural Awakenings Naples and Fort Myers

The Art of Inner Balance

It’s no wonder I resonate so deeply with this month’s theme, “Inner Balance.” As a Libra celebrating my birthday this month, I’m naturally drawn to the symbolism of the Scales and the desire to create greater harmony and peace in our lives and surroundings.

Perhaps that’s why I especially enjoyed this month’s conversation with Jeremy David Engels in our Wise Words department, “Mindful Interdependence” (page 28). When Engels shared that he identified early in life as a peacemaker and relationship builder, I recognized a kindred spirit. Perhaps he has some strong Libra placements in his birth chart!

In her conversation with Engels, writer Sandra Yeyati explores the powerful idea of interdependence—the understanding that none of us exists in isolation. From mindfulness and yoga to ecology, science and human relationships, Engels reminds us that our lives are woven together in countless ways, many of which we rarely notice.

I was especially struck by his interpretation of namaste as an acknowledgment of another person’s dignity, worth and inherent beauty—even when we disagree. What might change if we carried that awareness beyond the yoga mat and into our daily conversations? Perhaps we would listen more deeply, speak with greater care and approach differences with curiosity rather than combativeness.

I also love discovering how simple, natural practices can invite us back into balance. In “Healing Harmonies,” Zak Logan explores sound healing—from singing bowls and gongs to tuning forks, vocal toning and binaural beats—and how these practices may encourage relaxation, presence and emotional release (page 34).

What resonates most with me is that sound healing asks us to do something we rarely give ourselves permission to do: nothing. In a culture focused on constant improvement and accomplishment, simply lying still and allowing sound to wash over us can be a beautiful form of self-care. I have several sound-healing tools at home, including crystal bowls, drums and Tibetan bells, and I’m often found on a front-row mat at local sound-healing events. (See calendar for local events.)

Our feature, “Introduction to Somatic Therapies,” offers another reminder that healing isn’t always something we think our way through—it can begin by listening to the body. From conscious breathing and body scans to mindful movement and trauma-sensitive yoga, these approaches can help us reconnect with ourselves and cultivate greater resilience (page 24).

After 32 years as publisher of Natural Awakenings, I’ve been blessed to experience many of these practices firsthand. Regular breathwork, in particular, has become a powerful reset for me—what I often describe as “coming home to myself.”

Inner balance isn’t about achieving perfect calm. It’s about cultivating practices that help us navigate modern life with greater awareness, flexibility and resilience. As always, you’ll find plenty of tools and resources to support you in this month’s issue.

Here’s to deeper sighs and softer living,
